At The NeuroMedical Center, we recognize that high-quality neurological care depends on a variety of experts sharing their knowledge and experience for the benefit of the patient. That is why each patient receives treatment from a multi-disciplinary neurorehabilitation team under the direction of board certified physicians specializing in neurological rehabilitation. Our physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) specialists (also known as physiatrists) work collaboratively with a committed collection of rehabilitation nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, neuropsychologists, case managers, social workers, and dietitians to determine the right course for your needs.

The NeuroMedical Center offers four physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) physicians with advanced knowledge and training treating and rehabilitating orthopaedic and neurological conditions associated with injury to the brain and spinal cord.  These specialists oversee the medical care for inpatients and work closely with nurses, therapists, case managers, and other members of your rehab team to provide comprehensive, interdisciplinary rehabilitation programs.

Your Therapy Team

Individuals with a neurological illness or injury require the skilled intervention of a therapist in order to regain mobility and health.  At The NeuroMedical Center, our physical, occupational, and speech therapists utilize a variety of treatment techniques, cutting-edge technologies, and evidence-based practices in order to optimize recovery and achieve the highest possible level of function.  Your team of therapists will work with you one-on-one for the course of your treatment, assessing your progress, and adjusting your therapy as needed to meet your goals.

 

Physical Therapy

Physical therapists utilize a range of techniques, approaches, and equipment to help you achieve a speedy and effective recovery. Their expertise includes evaluating individual function deficits and offering treatment sessions specifically designed to improve a patient’s range of motion, flexibility, muscle strength, coordination, and balance.  Treatment programs emphasize:

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapists at The NeuroMedical Center Rehabilitation Hospital help patients re-learn or adapt ways to perform  every day tasks as independently as possible.  Like a physical therapist, occupational therapists will also provide activities to improve mobility, coordination, and balance.  An occupational therapist is also trained to address cognitive function to improve deficits in perception, memory, and attention span. Treatment programs strive to improve:  

  • Activities of Daily Living: Bathing, Dressing, Grooming, Self-Feeding, Toileting 
  • Home Management Tasks: Meal Preparation, Household Chores, Medication Management
  • Work-Related Tasks: Typing, hand writing ,and activities involving fine-motor skills

Speech and Language Therapy

Speech therapists at The NeuroMedical Center offer the full range of speech language therapy services aimed at improving a patient’s communication, cognitive and linguistic skills, and swallowing abilities resulting from stroke, brain injury, or neuromuscular disease.  To address speech and language impairments, our speech-language therapists offer many services:

  • Dysphagia (Swallowing) Evaluation & Treatment Using VitalStim and Ampcare
  • Voice Therapy to Remediate Disorders in Vocal Quality, Volume, Prosody, and Resonance
  • Language Therapy to Improve Comprehension and Expression

Your Nursing Team

The NeuroMedical Center Rehabilitation Hospital offers specialty trained rehab nurses who provide hands-on nursing care 24 hours a day.  These nurses possess the specialized knowledge and clinical skills necessary to provide care for people with chronic illnesses and physical disabilities.  They assess the physical, psychological, spiritual and sociocultural dimensions of patients and their families to formulate the nursing plan of care.  They implement the plan of care by providing nursing care and education to promote healing, restore function and to prevent complications and further loss.   In addition to providing nursing care, this expert team of rehab nurses coordinate educational activities and appropriate resources to develop an individualized discharge plan for patients and their families.  Nurses at The NeuroMedical Center Rehabilitation Hospital reinforce the techniques that are taught by rehab therapists and other healthcare disciplines as they coordinate their nursing activities to facilitate achievement of the patient’s overall goals.

Neuropsychologists

After a brain injury, many important skills like memory, critical thinking, and judgement can be affected. The NeuroMedical Center offers four in-house neuropsychologists and clinical psychologists who expertly evaluate cognitive and psychological processes. These specialized tests provide answers to very important questions for the individual undergoing rehabilitation and their families:

  • Can he or she live alone?
  • Are they able to make sound financial decisions?
  • Is the patient at risk of falling?
  • Does the patient have difficulty communicating?
  • What accommodations can be made to help increase independence at home or performance at work?

 

Case Managers & Social Workers

At The NeuroMedical Center Rehabilitation Hospital, you receive an entire team that will serve as the link between your multidisciplinary rehab team and your family.   Case managers and social workers,will keep your loved ones looped in on progress and discharge preparations. Social workers meet with patients and families to aide in coping skills and provide counseling services to best meet your needs. Our caring team of social workers meet with patients in an effort to enhance social functioning and overall well-being. Our team will also assist you in navigating a variety of insurance related inquires.  

Dietitians

Inpatients at The NeuroMedical Center Rehabilitation Hospital receive exceptional nutritional care upon admission. The nutritional status of each patient is assessed, and our dietitians recommend a diet based on each patient’s specific needs.  Because activity levels may change throughout the course of one’s therapy, our dietitian assists in maintaining appropriate nutrition for optimal energy levels.
