About Movement Disorders

There are many types of movement disorders, but what they all have in common is that they are complex disorders of the brain that cause difficulties in controlling one’s movements.  The NeuroMedical Center takes a comprehensive approach to the full range of movement disorders including:

  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Essential Tremor
  • Dystonia
  • Huntington’s disease
  • Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS)
  • Tourette Syndrome
  • Tremors

Movement Disorder Treatments

A disorder doesn’t have to be a disabler.  The NeuroMedical Center offers many medical and surgical options to help patients lead active lives.  How a movement disorder is treated will vary depending on the severity and underlying disease causing the symptoms. Treatments may include a combination of oral medications, intrathecal baclofen, intramuscular botox injections, or other conservative therapies.  Surgical intervention for certain movement disorders is recommended on a case-by-case basis.

If your neurologist recommends surgery to treat your movement disorder, The NeuroMedical Center offers Baton Rouge’s first and only Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) Program for Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy.  Our nationally-recognized program was founded in 2007 by neurologist & movement disorder specialist, Dr. Gerald J. Calegan and neurosurgeon, Dr. Paul J. Waguespack.  DBS has since helped hundreds of our patients control their movement disorder symptoms and greatly improve quality of life.
