Specialized Certifications and Advanced Technology
Recovery from a neurological event such as stroke and brain injury can be a long and complex process. Finding the right facility with clinicians who possess specialized expertise to rehabilitate your individual condition is essential. At The NeuroMedical Center Rehabilitation Hospital, our rehabilitation teams offer some of the most advanced certifications in the types of therapy you will need to achieve optimal recovery and independence. Leading-edge rehabilitation technology, coupled with expert hands-on therapy, help to maximize function and increase independence in our patients who have had stroke, spinal cord or brain injuries, or suffer from other neurological illnesses and conditions.
Neurodevelopmental Treatment (NDT)
NDT is a hands-on treatment approach used by our physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech-language pathologists. The approach was developed to enhance the function of individuals who have difficulties in controlling movement resulting from neurological challenges such as a hemiplegia following a stroke and traumatic brain injury. NDT focuses on the strengths and impairments of the individual patient to determine the best intervention strategies. Movements are facilitated with a hands-on approach, using techniques that establish or reestablish the postures and movements that will allow each patient to return to meaningful life roles.
Neuro-Integrative Functional Rehabilitation and Habilitation (Neuro-IFRAH®)
This approach is specifically intended for patients affected by lesions at the level of the brain stem and above, brain injury and stroke. It is an approach that integrates concepts related to normal movement, musculoskeletal biomecnhanics, function, sensory, cognitive, communicative, perceptual-motor and emotional considerations into activities of daily living and other functional activities. Applying treatment strategies to help patients obtain missing components of movement throughout the body so that they can resume independence with mobility and daily activities.
VitalStim®
Difficulty swallowing after stroke or brain injury is common. Speech-language therapists at The NeuroMedical Center are highly experienced treating patients suffering with swallowing difficulties or dysphagia with VitalStim® Therapy. VitalStim is a non-invasive, external electrical stimulation therapy that uses specifically designed electrodes applied to the muscles of the throat to promote proper swallowing. The advanced technology helps muscle strengthening, which rehabilitates the swallowing process. It also provides sensory stimulation, improving muscle recruitment and swallowing function. VitalStim, in combination with swallowing exercises, will restore function and help the brain remap the swallow.
Ampcare
Dysphagia therapists at The NeuroMedical Center also Ampcare as another advanced treatment for swallowing difficulties. Ampcare combines electrical stimulation with specially selected resistance exercises to help rehabilitate swallow function and help patients swallow safely.
LSVT BIG & LOUD®
Therapists at The NeuroMedical Center offer LSVT BIG and LOUD to help patients with Parkinson’s disease and other neurological conditions improve movement and speech. The emphasis is on exaggerated activity to create sustained improvement in movement and speech. LSVT programs are administered in an intensive manner — four times per week for four weeks — and are tailored to each patient. LSVT BIG patients typically notice improvements in walking, getting in and out of chairs, and rolling in bed as well as overall flexibility, balance, strength and endurance. LSVT LOUD patients can notice improvements in speech volume, voice quality, disordered rate and articulation, facial expression and intelligibility.
Spinal Unweighting Treadmill
The NeuroMedical Center Rehabilitation Hospital’s spinal unweighting treadmill system is part of an overall physical therapy program. The specialized equipment allows users to exercise at a reduced body weight, allowing for the safe increase of cardiovascular activity without additional wear and tear on the body. Under the supervision of a gait therapist, patients can work on specific aspects of their walking movements in a controlled environment. Our spinal unweighting treadmill is also used to advance gait training with patients that are limited by pain and weakness from both neurological and orthopedic deficits.
Rehabilitation Wii
At The NeuroMedical Center, the Nintendo Wii gaming system has crossed over into the therapeutic environment and has become an invaluable tool used to help patients rebuild their lives and renew hope after a life-changing neurological injury or illness. Our therapists use the Wii with our patients as a fun way to improve balance, coordination, endurance, strength and visual tasks while the patient participates in a competitive way.
Community Integration
As part of Baton Rouge’s Perkins Rowe, The NeuroMedical Center Rehabilitation Hospital is uniquely located in as a busy entertainment hub giving our patients the opportunity to participate in community outings to prepare for discharge and re-integration into the community.
