The founder of The NeuroMedical Center, Dr. Thomas B. Flynn, has been selected as this year’s recipient of the Istrouma Area Council, Boy Scouts of America’s Community Development Award and will be honored by the organization Thursday, August 4, 2016 in Baton Rouge.  This tremendous honor not only recognizes 60+ years of outstanding contributions to Scouting, but also Dr. Flynn’s enormous involvement with non-profits and charities around the world.

As a longtime advocate of the Boy Scouts of America, Dr. Flynn currently holds Board Membership in the Istrouma Area Council and assists in the fundraising efforts for Scouts across the Council’s 13 parish area and Wilkinson County, Mississippi. He began his interest in Scouting in the 1950’s when he taught rock and mountain climbing skills to Scouts in New Mexico. He was awarded an honorary rank of “Star” Scout. His commitment to Scouting has continued ever since.

“I feel that Scouting’s teaching embodies all the characteristics that young Americans so desperately need and which seem to be sorely lacking in their ‘everyday’ teaching, outside of their immediate families,” said Dr. Flynn. “The Scout Oath and Law say it all!”

Dr. Flynn has been a difference-maker in Louisiana and around the world. Dr. Flynn has worked in conjunction with prominent missionary groups for over 25 years, making self-funded, pro-bono annual trips to a handful of countries in Southeast Asia to perform surgery and teach neurosurgeons. This experience led Dr. Flynn to establish “The Southeast Asia Medical Aid and Teaching Fund,” enabling Southeast Asian neurosurgeons and neurologists to come to America for fellowship training in their respective specialties. Locally, he has been very active in Rotary Club for over 40 years and currently serves on numerous hospital boards across South Louisiana. Dr. Flynn was also a volunteer faculty member of Tulane University’s Neuroanatomy department where he served as teacher and mentor to first-year medical students.

Dr. Flynn’s commitment to charitable giving and community service only add to his legacy. When Dr. Flynn began practicing in Baton Rouge in 1967, he was the only board-certified neurosurgeon between Baton Rouge and Shreveport. Recognizing a need for expert neurological care in South Louisiana, Dr. Flynn joined forces with other neuro specialists to form The NeuroMedical Center in 1978.  Today, The NeuroMedical Center campus is home to 30 neurological specialists (The NeuroMedical Center Clinic), a 23-bed surgical hospital (The Spine Hospital of Louisiana at The NeuroMedical Center) and a 27-bed rehabilitation hospital (The NeuroMedical Center Rehabilitation Hospital), offering patients and their families the full-spectrum of neurological care under one roof. Dr. Flynn retired from medical practice in 2008.

The Istrouma Area Council Community Leadership Development Award is given to an individual who exemplifies strong leadership skills while maintaining the characteristics of the Scout Law -Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent. This honor will be the second major award accepted by Dr. Flynn in just ten months.  In October 2015, The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Greater Baton Rouge Chapter named Dr. Thomas Flynn the year’s Outstanding Philanthropist.

Dr. Flynn will accept the 2016 Community Leadership Development Award at a dinner Thursday, August 4th at Drusilla Place located at 3482 Drusilla Lane in Baton Rouge. This annual dinner serves as a major fundraiser for the Istrouma Area Council, Boy Scouts of America.  Tickets are $40 each. The proceeds from this event will be used by the Council to develop tomorrow’s leaders.
