Minimally Invasive Laser Spine Surgery

Laser spine surgery is a type of minimally invasive spinal surgery offered almost exclusively on the Gulf Coast by neurosurgeons at The NeuroMedical Center.  During laser surgery, a laser is used to remove portions of tissue located around the spinal cord and nerves of the back or neck.  Laser spine surgery involves a very minor incision in comparison to traditional open back surgery,  leading to less pain and a faster recovery for patients suffering from herniated discs, spinal stenosis, sciatica or other acute or chronic spinal conditions.

How laser Spine Surgery works

The NeuroMedical Center’s spine surgery laser is another advanced tool used by spine surgeons to provide optimal results for our patients.  Laser spine surgery utilizes a small, pen-like device which has the capabilities to heat, vaporize, and coagulate soft tissue structures that cause compression along your nerves.   Spine surgeries performed with a laser usually take about an hour total, and require only one small incision.   Most patients go home the same day and their small incisions are covered with a small bandage or band-aid.

laser spine surgery Conditions

Laser spine surgery is not the most effective treatment option for all spinal conditions, but can be used to treat the following symptoms and conditions:

  • Disc herniations / bulging discs
  • Sciatica
  • Pinched nerves
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Radiculopathy
  • Stenosis of the cervical or lumbar spine
  • Weakness and/or numbness in the arms/legs

benefits of Laser Spine Surgery

Traditional open spine surgery involves making an incision through the skin. The muscles are then dissected and stripped away from the vertebra to expose the spinal pathology. This approach can theoretically damage the surrounding soft tissues, and may result in increased pain, blood loss, and recovery time.

Spine surgery performed with a laser allows for the precise removal of soft tissue structures, including herniated discs and scar tissue.  It only takes laser spine surgery experts at The NeuroMedical Center minutes to remove the tissue they are targeting, achieving results that are quicker, safer, and require less recovery time than traditional back or neck surgery. Patient benefits include:

  • Less post-operative pain
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Less anesthesia and radiation exposure
  • Smaller incisions leading to less scarring
  • Reduced blood loss during surgery
  • Reduced risk of infection

Recovery After Laser Spine Surgery

Recovery from laser spine surgery is different for every patient. On average, patients who have undergone laser spine surgery or other minimally invasive techniques are discharged from the hospital the same day of their surgery.  On average, many of our patients return to full activity a few weeks.
