Treating Movement Disorders
A New Path Forward
For patients living with movement disorders, daily life can become increasingly difficult. Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) offers a proven, advanced solution designed to help restore control, reduce symptoms and improve quality of life.
The NeuroMedical Center is home to Baton Rouge’s first and only DBS program. Our experienced team has helped hundreds of patients regain function, confidence and quality of life.
What Is DBS?
DBS is a standard-of-care, FDA-approved surgical treatment, approved in 2002 for advanced Parkinson’s disease. Its use has since expanded to treat conditions including essential tremor, dystonia, OCD and epilepsy in patients who continue to experience significant symptoms despite medication.
While DBS is not a cure, it can provide meaningful, long-term improvement in how patients move, function and live day to day.
DBS may help:
- Reduce tremors, stiffness and slowed movement
- Improve the ability to perform daily tasks
- Decrease reliance on medications for most patients
- Minimize medication-related side effects
- Restore confidence and independence
How DBS Helps Manage Symptoms
DBS uses carefully targeted electrical impulses to help regulate abnormal brain activity associated with movement disorders. These signals can help reduce symptoms such as tremors, stiffness, slowed movement and involuntary movements that may no longer be adequately controlled with medication alone.
While DBS does not stop disease progression or provide a cure, many patients experience significant improvements in symptom control, allowing them to maintain greater independence and participate more fully in daily activities.
“DBS Gave Me My Life Back”
After years of living with challenging symptoms, patients often describe a renewed sense of independence and possibility. With the right care team and advanced treatment, meaningful improvement is within reach.

How DBS Works
DBS is performed in two stages:
01.
Lead placement
Thin wires are implanted in targeted areas of the brain
02.
Neurostimulator placement
A small device is implanted under the skin in the chest
After surgery, the system is activated and carefully programmed by your neurologist to deliver the right level of stimulation. These electrical signals help block abnormal nerve activity responsible for symptoms, often resulting in noticeable improvement.
The system can be adjusted over time to match your needs and is fully reversible.
What Happens After Surgery?
A few weeks after surgery, your neurologist will activate and program the neurostimulator. During this process, stimulation settings are carefully adjusted to provide the greatest symptom relief while minimizing potential side effects.
You will also receive guidance on how to use your DBS system, including how to check the device and manage settings within the parameters established by your care team. Because symptoms and needs can change over time, the system can be adjusted during follow-up appointments to ensure optimal results and long-term symptom management.
