Steve Monk, M.D.

Dr. Monk is a Baton Rouge native. He graduated summa cum laude from Vanderbilt University with degrees in molecular & cellular biology and economics, during which time he was also a member of the Commodore football team. He received his medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. Dr. Monk completed his neurosurgery residency at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC, where he was trained by the surgeons at Carolina Neurosurgery & Spine Associates, one of the oldest and largest neurosurgery groups in the country. Dr. Monk completed additional fellowship training in minimally invasive and complex spine surgery at the Norton Leatherman Spine Fellowship in Louisville, KY, and cerebrovascular, skull base, and minimally invasive endoscopic brain surgery at Banner Health in Phoenix, AZ, under the mentorship of Dr. Peter Nakaji.  

Dr. Monk is thrilled to be returning to Baton Rouge to provide high-quality neurosurgical care to his community. His special interests include minimally invasive microscopic and endoscopic spine surgery, motion-preserving spine surgery including artificial disc replacement, revision and complex spine surgery, intrinsic brain tumors, skull base tumors, cranial nerve compression syndromes such as trigeminal neuralgia and hemifacial spasm, and cerebrovascular disorders including aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, and moyamoya disease. In his spare time, he enjoys hunting, working out, and spending time with his wife and young daughter.
