The NeuroMedical Center’s Dr. Gregory L. Fautheree Performs First Procedures Using Revolutionary WEB® Aneurysm Embolization System
The NeuroMedical Center’s Dr. Gregory L. Fautheree is Baton Rouge’s first neurosurgeon to successfully treat a brain aneurysm using the Woven EndoBridge (WEB®) Aneurysm Embolization System. This FDA-approved, minimally-invasive technology has been called a huge advancement in the treatment of challenging aneurysms that often require multiple implants or open brain surgery. On Tuesday, November 12th, 2019 Dr. Fautheree performed three successful procedures using the WEB® system at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
A brain aneurysm is an abnormal bulging or ballooning of a blood vessel in the brain called an artery. Aneurysms are filled with blood and in some circumstances may rupture leading to serious consequences including severe functional disability, cognitive loss, and even death.
The WEB® System is designed to disrupt blood flow entering the aneurysm. The WEB® implant, a permanent, self-expanding mesh basket implant made from flexible ultra-fine wires braided together, is threaded with a catheter through the arm or groin and released into the sac of the aneurysm. Different sizes of the device are made to fit different types and shapes of aneurysms. The device is deployed directly in the aneurysm to pack it and promote clot formation, healing of the vessel, and normal blood flow. In most cases, the body seals off the neck of the aneurysm over time, essentially curing it.
“The revolutionary WEB® Aneurysm Embolization System will allow us to treat a much larger number of aneurysms than we ever have before, with less risks and shorter recovery periods,” said endovascular neurosurgeon Dr. Greg L. Fautheree. “The procedure takes 40 minutes to complete compared to four to five hours if done the traditional way, with most patients being released and cleared to resume normal activities the next day.”
“We are excited to offer this brand new aneurysm procedure” said K. Scott Wester, president and CEO of Our Lady of the Lake. “Through our collaborative partnership with The NeuroMedical Center and the expertise of their physicians, we are able to deliver world-class neurosurgical care to every patient that comes through our doors and we are proud to be the first hospital in Baton Rouge to perform this procedure.”
In clinical testing, the WEB® System was shown to be highly effective and safer than other options currently on the market. Additionally, the WEB® device allows surgeons to treat aneurysms without the need for placing stents in the brain, which keeps patients off of post-procedure blood thinning medications, such as Plavix.
