A Story of Victory

Jose Mathews
Jose Mathews
Baker, Louisiana
Jose Mathews has been a lot of things in his life - in the army, a licensed cosmetologist, police officer in New Orleans and today, a preacher. One thing he hadn't planned on being - at the young age of 49 - was a stroke victim. Jose was at home by himself when he felt a strange sensation - it became really hot and he realized something was not right with his body. He tried to stand up, but sat back down and then was unable to stand again. A bit concerned, he began calling his family. Finally, he realized he was having a stroke and called 911. Paramedics arrived quickly and rushed him to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center where he was treated for stroke. After three days at The Lake, he was referred to the NeuroMedical Center Rehabilitation Hospital. He was not in good shape. "I had lost the ability to use the entire right side of body. I had a hard time moving. I couldn't walk, I could barely talk, and I couldn't do some of the simplest things in life like putting on my socks and shoes. But Dr. Jyoti Pham and my therapists were great. I trusted them and they were determined to get me walking again. The people at NeuroMedical Center Rehabilitation Hospital really took the time to care for me as an individual. They got to know me, the type of person I am and realized I needed to get home quickly." Our rehabilitation team discovered Jose Mathews was looking after a group of women and kids who had moved up to Baton Rouge from New Orleans after Katrina. As the only man in the house, Jose was caring for his wife and 21-year-old daughter, his 70-year-old mother and 75-year-old mother-in-law, a 31-year-old female friend with four kids and another 14-year-old girl. The NeuroMedical Center team pushed Jose to do his best and give the extra effort they knew would speed his recovery. He knows it's because of them that he was able to get back on his feet so fast. After about a month of rehabilitation, Jose was discharged. Within two months he was jogging, riding a bike, and preaching again. It didn't take long for him to win a competitive race. At The NeuroMedical Center, we are proud to be a part of Jose Mathew's victory.
