Discovering Epilepsy: Diagnosis and Treatment
Epilepsy is a chronic disorder marked by recurrent and unprovoked seizures. The seizure originates in the brain and may affect any part of the body. There are 2 types of seizures associated with epilepsy: generalized seizures and partial or focal seizures. Generalized seizures happen in all areas of the brain, whereas partial or focal seizures happen in one central location. Millions of people in the United States live with epilepsy, and if treated properly, they live full, productive lives. However, the onset of symptoms and early diagnosis is scary and life-altering to those affected and their loved ones. Seizures can impede a person's ability to participate in family functions, work and routine activities, plus cause safety issues. Early and accurate diagnosis is important for determining the most effective treatment plan and management goals for each patient.
At The NeuroMedical Center, the Epilepsy Program is within the Neurology Department, where we use an interdisciplinary approach for the treatment and management plan of many neurological disorders, including epilepsy. The diagnostic process starts with an in-depth consultation and tests. Our advanced technology includes EEG tests and brain imaging tests, such as a CT and MRI scans. Knowing the events that led up to and during your seizures can be helpful to our diagnostic team when determining an individual treatment plan. We encourage patients to bring anyone who witnessed the seizures if possible. Our specialists will compile the information in order to provide you and your doctor with a comprehensive and individual diagnosis.
There are a variety of treatment options available that you and your physician will discuss in order to control your epilepsy seizures. Medication, surgery, nerve stimulation and dietary therapy are most common to control or eliminate seizures. The mission of the Epilepsy Program is to create an individualized plan for our patients to regain control of their lives and achieve optimal health. We strive for a seizure control method with the least possible side effects while providing the patient with the most effective care.
